Offshore Observations

The source region of the next large subduction zone earthquake in Cascadia is offshore where few instruments are located.  Enhancing the quality and quantity of offshore observations in Cascadia is critical to long-term efforts of advancing CRESCENT science goals and estimating the seismic hazard. The Offshore Observations special interest group will gather broad community input on observational needs and priorities and will identify specific areas for accelerated progress through coordination and the development of collaborations that link the academic community, government entities, private companies, and international partners. In 2025, CRESCENT will host a community workshop, bringing the Cascadia offshore science community together to discuss recent progress, observational needs, and the path forward for the Offshore Observations group.

Meetings

1/8/25: Offshore Observations SIG Meets at the USGS Subduction Zone Meeting

The Offshore Observations SIG held a lunchtime session at the USGS Subduction Zone Meeting in Seattle, Washington. The SIG sought to gather broad community input on offshore observational needs and priorities in Cascadia and identify specific areas for accelerated progress through coordination and the development of collaborations. This interactive lunchtime session introduced the SIG and its planned activities for the coming year,  and also featured an update on SZ4D’s planning for offshore observations in Cascadia and Alaska.

11/18/24: Materials from SZ4D virtual discussion

The Offshore Observations SIG held a virtual discussion on November 18, 2024 from 10-11:30am PST to learn about SZ4D plans for offshore observations in Cascadia and to discuss synergies between SZ4D and other efforts offshore Cascadia. Slides and a recording of the presentation portion of the discussion are posted here.
