Overview
CRESCENT’s GEI Program Manager Dr. Shannon Fasola and Dr. Gabriela Noriega from the Statewide California Earthquake Center (SCEC) collaborate to deliver two virtual, evidence-based mentor training programs annually. Based on the Entering Mentoring curricula developed by the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experience in Research, these trainings are designed to help mentors and mentees develop skills for engaging in productive, culturally responsive, research mentoring relationships–relationships that optimize the success of both mentors and mentees–by providing practical tools and connecting participants with key resources.

About
Research Mentee Training
Research mentoring is collaborative in that mentees and mentors engage as partners through reciprocal activities such as planning, acting, reflecting, questioning, and problem-solving. Successful mentoring relationships are those in which mentees reach the individual milestones that allow them to progress to the next stage along the trajectory of their academic career.
This training is designed to support graduate students in developing the skills needed to successfully navigate the research training environment. Participants will learn how to proactively shape their mentoring relationships and their work environments, better understand themselves and their needs, and effectively carry out their relationships and climates to ensure those needs are met.
While priority consideration will be given to graduate students, we encourage any student interested in developing effective research mentoring relationships to apply.

Research Mentor Training
Effective research mentoring relationships are critical to developing the next generation of geoscientists. Studies have demonstrated that training for both mentors and mentees enhances their knowledge, skills, and behaviors, leading to more productive mentoring relationships. Moreover, culturally responsive interactions between mentors and mentees empower mentees to advance in their research careers, equipping them to become future mentors, scientific leaders, and collaborative research team members. This progression is vital for developing a well-trained, engaged, and diverse geoscience workforce.
This workshop is open to researchers at all career stages who are interested in strengthening their mentoring skills. Priority consideration will be given to postdoctoral researchers and early-career faculty (within five years of transition), but all interested mentors are encouraged to apply.
