Geoscience Fellowship
About
Program Overview
CRESCENT offers fellowships to graduate students and postdoctoral scholars for travel to conferences or workshops focused on professional development. This effort seeks to help candidates strengthen the presentation of their skills and accomplishments in anticipation of entering the workforce. Appropriate professional development events should provide information, skill development, and networking opportunities that help participants prepare for careers in earthquake science. Events should include leaders from a variety of institution types and career paths to provide guidance that helps participants to be stronger candidates for their desired positions and to succeed in their field.
Fellowship Includes
- One-time stipend distributed upfront to help cover costs of meeting registration, accommodation, and/or transportation for a conference or workshop.
Important Dates
- Review Applications
January 15, 2025
June 15, 2025
Application
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, and reviewed twice a year, January 15 and June 15. Funding awards will be considered up to ~$1000. Number of applications accepted per term is dependent upon funding availability.
If accepted, distribution of the fellowship is contingent upon receipt of proof of attendance: a copy of the conference (or event) registration or abstract submission. Directions for submission will be distributed in the acceptance letter.
Eligibility
Applicants must be:
- a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its possessions.
- a full-time graduate student or post doc at a US-based institution who is interested in a career in earthquake science and broadening participation.
CRESCENT focuses on preparing and diversifying the next generation of geoscientists. Students from minority-serving institutions or who identify as one of the following: BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and people of color), Latinx, LGBTQ+, and first-generation college students will be prioritized in the selection process.
Preference will also be given to first-time conference or event attendees, those attending in-person, and those presenting.
In addition, applicants will be reviewed based on responses to the following prompts:
- How the conference or event will help your career goals and enhance your academic experience and professional development.
- How receiving the fellowship would reduce barriers to participation in the conference or event.
- A brief overview of your research and your involvement in broadening participation efforts.
Please note that stipends may be considered taxable income. Since each situation is unique, we encourage you to consult with your tax advisor.
