Fall Visit at Neah Bay High School

This week we were lucky enough to visit Neah Bay High School again for our fall site visit this year! It was the first time out here for several team members, so it was exciting for us to meet all of the students, teachers, and community members that are involved in the CCASE program.

Our drive up to the Makah Reservation was met with countless wildlife sightings, including orcas, seals, sea lions, and bald eagles. During our visit to the school, we got to teach two 9th grade classes about seismometers and earthquakes. The students were then able to make their own ‘earthquakes’ using the Make-A-Quake seismometer activity set up in the classroom.

After class, we set up our “College Table” in the common area where students could learn about our experiences as UW students and ask various questions about college life and admissions. We handed out a variety of pamphlets full of helpful information, and fun stickers that hopefully students can remember us by!

We also had the opportunity to visit the woodshop and learn about the fascinating student projects taking place including making canoes, carvings, cutting boards, and epoxy tables. Before we left for the day, the whole school gathered to watch a livestream of the Neah Bay volleyball team play at the state championship. They ended up winning their game – go Red Devils!

It was great getting to meet all of the students and community members during this trip, and we are excited to come back in the spring to teach more about the geosciences and seismology!
